<p>Social media is a term that everyone now knows, even in the remote areas of the world. For example, Facebook and Twitter is known worldwide and being used worldwide on a regular basis. Nowadays, social media is also turning into <a href="https://tagshop.ai/blog/social-shopping-platforms/">shopping platforms</a>.</p>
<p>However, that wasn’t always the case, social media how it is now has been around a fairly short time and nowadays people can’t imagine living without.</p>
<h2>The Birth of Social Media (1997)</h2>
<p>In 1997 the first social media site was called Six Degrees, this site lasted from 1997 to 2001. It allowed users to create a profile and then friend other users.</p>
<p>After Six Degrees, the internet then moved into the era of blogging and instant messaging. Although some people may not see blogging as social media, the term did fit because people were able to communicate instantly.</p>
<p>The term blog is the form of the phrase “Weblog” which was invented by Jorn Barger, an early blogger who was the editor of the site Robert Wisdom.</p>
<h2>The Internet is Everywhere (2000)</h2>
<p>By 2000 around 100 million people had access to the internet. From there it became very common for people to be socially engaged online.</p>
<p>More and more people began to utilise chat rooms for making friends, dating and discussing topics of interest between one another.</p>
<p>However, the huge boom for social media was still to come.</p>
<h2>First Social Media Surge (2003)</h2>
<p>As much as the younger generation of today might not have heard of it but back in the 2000’s there was a website called MySpace, this was one of the most popular places to set up a profile and make friends.</p>
<p>It was the original social media profile website, which led to aspiring websites like Facebook.<br>But, now MySpace doesn’t have a very big user base compared to other websites like Facebook and Twitter.</p>
<p>Another website that has been around since the beginning and is still used today is LinkedIn, which is specifically for professionals who want to network with each other.</p>
<p>Most of social media websites we have today are very like LinkedIn, in the way that they are specifically for one thing or they have a unique quality that has made then popular.</p>
<h2>Beginning of Facebook and Twitter (2005)</h2>
<p>Mark Zuckerberg launched what would soon become the social media giant in 2004, and it would set the bar for all the other social media platforms we have today.</p>
<p>Facebook is the number one social media website today and is currently boasting over a billion users.</p>
<p>However, in 2004 Facebook was launched just for Harvard students, but he saw the potential and released the service to the world.</p>
<p>In 2006, the popularity of text messaging inspired Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Noah Glass and Evan Williams to create Twitter.</p>
<p>A service that had the unique distinction of allowing users to send tweets of 140 characters or less. And today Twitter has over 500 million users.</p>
<h2>The Pack That Then Followed (2010 ish)</h2>
<p>Very quickly there become dozens of other websites providing social media services of some kind.</p>
<p>Flickr was one of the earliest and still is one of the most popular photo sharing sites, others did include Photobucket and Instagram, with Instagram gaining popularity today as one of the top social media sites to include business cards and other media.</p>
<p>Tumblr then made an appearance being a microblogging website which started in 2007 by David Krap and is now owned by Yahoo.</p>
<p>One thing that did start happening around this time was that social media became widely used but it also became widespread in business.</p>
<p>Websites would start to list their social media addresses, businesses started to include their Facebook and Twitter addresses. With many other tools starting to include their social media information.</p>
<p>Social media icons where seen everywhere and it started to become unusual for people to see businesses or brands that didn’t have them.</p>
<p>This was the time where social media would help marketers boost their visibility. Benefits of social media marketing for businesses started to show.</p>
<p>It was very clear for both large and small businesses to use social media as a marketing tool.</p>
<h2>Social Media Today (2017)</h2>
<p>Social media now consists of thousands of different social media platforms, that all serve the same but with slightly different purposes.</p>
<p>Some social media platforms are more popular than others, but that’s always the way, people will be drawn to the platform that they feel suits them best.</p>
<p>For example, Instagram will be suited more to someone with a photography mind that expresses themselves through photographs and other platforms like Twitter suit people that prefer to communicate through short bursts of information.</p>

<h2>What Does the Future of Social Media Look Like?</h2>
<p>You cannot really predict what the future of social media is. But we do know that people are social animals and the more ability they have to communicate the more popular social media will become.</p>
<p>And with new exciting technologies around the corner the future of social media will be interesting.</p>

<p>Once this trend was following, the idea of filters, masks and frames came into play to make your stories more exciting and playful.</p>
<p>But which app has mastered the form of Stories? Well let’s find out…</p>
<h2>Snapchat Stories.</h2>
<p>As we all know Snapchat is the originator of Stories, and by Summer 2014 the engagement on Stories for Snapchat had far surpassed person to person snaps.</p>
<p>Snapchat have also put filters, masks and frames into play for users to play around with on their Stories.</p>
<p>So, now let’s talk about the pros and cons of Snapchat Stories;</p>
<h3>Pros</h3>
<ul>
<li>Being a newer platform there is less marketing and advertising competition. Giving brands the opportunity to get in early.</li>
<li>Snapchat brought out Stories first, therefore every other app that starts their Stories will always be compared to how Snapchat mastered their Stories.</li>
<li>The filters, masks and frames make users stay on the app to see what’s new, their Stories have become entertaining.</li>
<li>They are forever changing the way their Stories work, making changes boost user interest to see what’s new and what’s changed.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Cons</h3>
<ul>
<li>Ads have started appearing everywhere on Snapchat, especially after Stories, it makes the experience annoying for users.</li>
<li>Not everyone uses the Stories, some users still prefer to send snaps to selected people, some sometimes it feels like you are seeing Stories from the same people all the time, which can get repetitive and boring.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Instagram Stories.</h2>
<p>Instagram stories seems to have a wider net demographically, it also boasts more daily active users.<br>As of February, Instagram had an estimated 400 million daily active users against Snapchat’s 158 million. However, Facebook does easily beat both with an estimated 1.23 billion daily active users (as of December).</p>
<p>So, with Instagram you are more likely to see a variety of different Snapchat stories, some from people you may not know, you just follow each other on Instagram, and some from people you do know.</p>
<p>Instagram is a more visual and expressive app than Snapchat and Facebook, so <a href="https://www.veloceinternational.com/instagram/how-to-view-instagram-stories-anonymously-without-anyone-knowing/">Instagram Stories</a> are more expressive.</p>
<p>We also have some pros and cons for Instagram Stories and they are;</p>
<h3>Pros</h3>
<ul>
<li>You can hide your story from anyone you don’t want to see it, without making your account private, you can even hide your story from people that are following you.</li>
<li>Instagram Stories don’t just appear in your Instagram feed, if someone you follow has posted a story a ring will simply appear around their profile picture at the top of the app and it’s your choice if you open it or ignore it.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Cons</h3>
<ul>
<li>Better used for visual products, people don’t generally use Instagram to post about their life, so some users feel Instagram Stories are a little useless in the sense of they are there to post about your life.</li>
<li>Instagram copied Snapchat with their ideas, which isn’t very original and unique and as we all know users like to see originality and uniqueness.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Facebook Stories.</h2>
<p>So, Facebook launched their Stories in the main app, which makes loads of sense considering Stories have become such a big thing for users.</p>
<p>But Facebook have previously borrowed heavily from the Snapchat <a href="https://www.modestmoney.com/playbook-review/">playbook review</a>, 15 times. They even tried to buy the company back in 2013.</p>
<p>It’s all very much like Snapchat, you have filters, masks and frames to choose from to make your Stories more exciting.</p>
<p>There are also some pros and cons for Facebook Stories as well, they are;</p>
<h3>Pros</h3>
<ul>
<li>Simple design is relatively easy to use, which will help Facebook Stories do well with its billions of users.</li>
<li>Not a huge delay on making it recognise you, making the process of putting a story up a lot quicker and easier.</li>
<li>The masks and filters is something that Facebook changed, making it a cooler experience for users, with their partnerships it allowed them to have different filters and masks for users to explore with.</li>
<li>Facebook give you the option to post the content of the story directly to your wall as well.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Cons</h3>
<ul>
<li>The quality of the filer options isn’t the greatest.</li>
<li>It doesn’t quiet have a brand or aesthetic that makes users want to post on Facebook Stories, whereas Instagram inspires you too and Snapchat just wants to help you have a laugh.</li>
<li>Right now, the Facebook Stories just seem a little rushed, I’m sure that will change as they progress and make changes, but right now it doesn’t make you want to post a story.</li>
</ul>
<p>Overall Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook all have pretty good Stories, and as you can see Snapchat Stories have more pros than cons, which isn’t surprising considering they started the Stories.</p>
<p>However, I do think it is down to personal preference as to what Stories you use, users will go the app they feel is better, and although from pros and cons Snapchat seems to be better real users may not feel that way.</p>						</div>
